Pippa Middleton has used her Waitrose magazine column to announce that she is pregnant with her first child.

The sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, who is married to hedge fund manager James Matthews, told readers of her monthly fitness and lifestyle musings in Waitrose Weekend that she had found it "hard" to keep the news under wraps.

Speculation over whether she was pregnant first emerged in April and continued following the couple's appearance at the royal wedding last month.

"I was lucky to pass the 12-week scan without suffering from morning sickness," the 34-year-old wrote.

"That meant I was able to carry [on] as normal and continue my sports. Who knows what the next few weeks have in store."

Sister Kate has not been so lucky when it comes to avoiding morning sickness, having experienced it from the outset of carrying Prince George, Princess Charlotte and, most recently, Prince Louis.

Each time it came in the form of hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes severe vomiting and can lead to dehydration, weight loss and a build-up of toxins in the blood or urine called ketosis.

Ms Middleton, who is a keen marathon runner, has promised to provide regular updates on her pregnancy in her column.
